Tonight the kiddos made Hush Puppies! My kiddos absolutely love to help me in the kitchen. I love being able to make sure my kids know what they are doing in the kitchen. I hope to give them enough pointers for when they move out and have to cook for themselves, they know what they are doing.
Here are the ingredients the used:
3/4 cup flour
3/4 cup cornmeal
1 jalapeno (chopped)
1 onion (chopped)
1 cup of cheddar cheese
2 teaspoons of salt
1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder
1 egg
1 cup of milk
1 tablespoon of honey
1 teaspoon of creole seasoning
They put all the dry ingredients into a bowl and whisked them together. Then they added the onion, jalapeno, cheese, egg, honey and milk to the bowl. They stirred the ingredients together and set the bowl aside.
In a cast iron skillet they began to melt down the crisco oil. Now, I test the oil by getting my hand wet, and drip the water in the pan to see if it sizzles. If it does, I know the oil is ready for frying. After I tested the oil, I helped them spoon out dollops of batter into the pan. We flipped the hush puppy to the other side once it became golden brown on one side.
They continued to do this until all the batter was gone. Talk about a delicious addition to our leftover gumbo!
